For once the announced opener of an exhibition at the Political Cartoon Gallery showed up. In contrast to the likes of George “Can’t come, I’m in the Big Brother house” Galloway, Lord Norman Lamont actually came on wednesday night… He even delivered a rather enjoyable speech!
The mood was generally jovial, although I was seized upon by some Ukip members who moaned that there are no right wing cartoonists in Britain.
You’d think the right would enjoy seeing disillusioned leftist cartoonists lampooning the likes of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for the lack of social responsibility. There is no attack worse than that from your own side.
Curiously though, the Ukippers didn’t quite get that idea.
They argued that cartoonists should challenge the establishment, and as the left now inhabits that position, more cartoonists should attack them from the right.
I respectfully disagreed.
New Labour hardly represents the left!
Norman Baker MP joined the sizable constituency of cartoonists in the pub after the event. An old university peer of cartoonist Andy Davey, we got to know him as Norm. Nice chap.
All in all,
a good night was had by all.
..oh and the exhibition is really worth a look!
