Watch John McCain as Sarah Palin makes her maiden speech as his running mate…
The beaming Gordon Brown-smile and restless hands exudes confidence.
He’s practically shouting: “Hah, take that Obama! I’ve got myself a Hillary! She’s a Republican, she’s a woman, she’s…she’s…she…Take that Obama!”
Oooh yeah…

Counterattack Ad…

August 29, 2008

John McCain took a break from barracking Obama yesterday, and released a supposedly magnanimous ad congratulating the Senator on his nomination “on this historic day.”
McCain normally sounds fairly genuine in his straight-talking gaff-prone way. This ad however is about as insincere as they come.

There is a superbly simple home made “counterattack” on Youtube which pure satire.
Slowing McCain’s voice, adding sound effects and using some basic filters, it gets its point across brilliantly.
I know, it’s hardly the apex of originality, but because of the rather disturbing undertones of the original ad, it works so well by emphasizing what is already there. Or to put it better, it’s funny because it’s true!

The last line is particularly amusing, in a disturbingly ageist sort of way.
Have a look – and please do tell me if you didn’t laugh at all!

Steve Bell in Denver…

August 27, 2008

The lucky sod!
In addition to his usual op-ed cartoons, he does a great convention sketchbook – similar to the ones we’ve seen from the rather less exotic British party conferences. A daily series of sketches from in around the convention centre which as well as being interesting for their unique take on the event, also give a great insight into the way the Steve works.
Go see.

With Peter Brookes back in the office on Tuesday, my six-days-a-week summer stint is coming to an end. It’s back to normal for a week or two, before I take a couple of weeks holiday.

Normally July and August are the most difficult months of the year to do cartoons. However recession, prime ministerial troubles, olympics and conflicts, have meant that those of us working through this summer actually have had some news to work with! Makes a difference from desperately trying to squeeze jokes out of silly season exclusives.
And with the rain pouring down outside, it hasn’t even been too bad being in a studio for a month and a half!

Look out for Peter’s cartoon on Wednesday (all those weeks of frustratingly good material will have made him eager to return I imagine!). I’m back in the paper on Monday.
